Hiring part-time across time zones: a playbook for startups
Senior part-time talent in another time zone can cover your morning, review overnight and ship while you sleep. Here's how to set it up so it works.

Many experienced engineers want a focused second project rather than a second full-time job. For a startup, that's a way to get senior judgement for the hours you actually need. Time zones are what make it work: their evening can be your working day.
Decide how much live overlap you need
Two or three hours of overlap is enough for a stand-up, a review session and some pairing. Some roles need none at all: code review, test writing, documentation and well-scoped tickets work well async. Be explicit about which you need before you start looking.
Scope work in weekly slices
Part-time works best with clear, self-contained pieces of work and a weekly rhythm: agree priorities at the start of the week, review at the end, and keep a written log so nothing depends on being online at the same time.
Ask for evidence, not just a CV
- A skill assessment in your stack, scored against a clear rubric.
- A background check that confirms identity and employment history.
- Confirmation that the work doesn't conflict with their day job.
Respect the day job
The best part-time hires are careful about their employer. Don't ask them to work during their contracted hours, don't ask about their employer's internals, and accept that they may want to stay anonymous until you've both decided to go ahead.
